How to Go to Bhutan

All Travel Routes Explained

Bhutan may be remote, but getting there is simpler than you think - once you know the options.

Whether you're flying in or entering by road, this guide explains exactly how to go to Bhutan, with entry points, travel tips, and routes for both Indian and international travelers.

Option 1: Fly to Bhutan (Paro International Airport)

Bhutan's only international airport is located in Paro, a quiet valley surrounded by mountains. Flying is the fastest and most popular way to reach Bhutan, especially for travelers from major Indian cities and neighboring countries.

Cities with Direct Flights to Paro:

  • From India: Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati
  • From outside India: Kathmandu, Dhaka, Bangkok, Singapore

Airlines That Fly to Bhutan:

  • Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines)
  • Bhutan Airlines

Flights to Bhutan are limited and often sell out during high season, so it's best to book early.

Option 2: Enter Bhutan by Road (Land Borders)

If you enjoy road travel or are already near eastern India, entering Bhutan by road is a scenic and cost-effective option. Indian travelers often prefer this route.

Main Entry Points by Road:

1. Phuentsholing (Most Popular)

  • Entry from Jaigaon (West Bengal)
  • Nearest airport: Bagdogra (~4.5-5 hours by car)
  • Common route for travelers from Siliguri or Dooars

2. Gelephu

  • Entry from Assam, used for central/eastern Bhutan trips
  • Suitable for long tours connecting Bumthang, Trongsa

3. Samdrup Jongkhar

  • Entry from Guwahati side (Assam)
  • Ideal for eastern Bhutan itineraries or long drives across the country

Entry permits for Indian citizens are processed at the land border (or in advance online). Foreign nationals must have their visa pre-approved.

Entry Requirements Based on Nationality

Indian Citizens:

  • No visa required, but an Entry Permit is needed
  • Carry a valid passport or voter ID
  • Pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) - Rs. 1,200 per person per night

  • Must confirm itinerary and SDF in advance
  • Visa is issued after approval, and stamped on arrival
