Set at the confluence of two rivers and surrounded by jacaranda blooms in spring, Punakha Dzong is often called the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. But beyond its beauty lies deep history, sacred rituals, and royal tradition - making it a must-see on every Bhutan itinerary.


What Is Punakha Dzong?

Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this dzong has served as Bhutan's capital, the site of royal weddings, and the winter residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot).

Its full name - Pungthang Dewa Chenpoi Phodrang - means "The Palace of Great Bliss", and walking through its ancient courtyards truly feels like stepping into a living spiritual legacy.


Where Is It Located?

  • In Punakha Valley, central-west Bhutan
  • At the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male river) and Mo Chhu (female river)
  • About 2.5–3 hours' drive from Thimphu
  • A central stop on most 5 to 7-day Bhutan tours

  • Three Great Courtyards: Each with stunning woodwork, open spaces, and access to temples

  • Throne Room: The venue for royal ceremonies and coronations (viewable from outside)
  • Spring Blooms: Famous for blooming purple jacaranda trees in April/May

The dzong also hosts the colorful Punakha Tshechu and Dromche festivals, bringing locals and monks together in celebration.


Entry Details & Visiting Tips

  • No entry fee (access through a registered Bhutan tour operator)
  • Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, with some temple areas occasionally closed for rituals
  • Dress modestly: covered arms and legs recommended
  • Photography allowed in outer courtyards, but not inside temples

  • Spring (Mar-May): Warm, blooming jacarandas, perfect photography
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Clear skies and bright light for detailed architecture shots
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere
  • Avoid monsoon months (Jun-Aug) due to rain and slipperiness
